Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
