Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Post Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.
Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the city registered an AQI above 500, which represents 10x the recommended level established by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly smog that covers the city as the cold season begins.
However in recent months, the recently formed city leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, the court approved the request, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Many recording stations throughout the city showed pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous levels observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events.
Persistent Environmental Crisis
The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the city have persisted as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating toxic smog that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air descends.
Medical and Financial Consequences
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.
These hazardous conditions results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can result in malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand early deaths per year in the city.
