French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
