The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
