Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
