During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
